A
22 hour overnight train might not be everyone's idea of
fun, certainly not ours, but fun it was.
I
spent a little time taking photos from both the front
and rear of the train (hanging out of the rear window
and then moving up to the front to climb on the engine!).
We spent a few hours chatting and playing on the GameBoy
(Richard quickly becoming an addict) but it wasn't long
before we started on the beer as the train hurtled south
towards Malaysia.
Strangely
the whole train was converted very early on into pockets
of sleeping berths and everyone was in bed by 8:00! You
can imagine, the 4 English blokes in seats 26-30 did not
want an early night so we rolled out the Brandy from the
bar and proceeded to the end of the carriage where we
later offered two train staff a small drink; this proved
to be a mistake because they got very drunk very quickly
and when they'd had enough proceeded to the opposite end
of the carriage bouncing off all of the bunks like a ball
in a pinball machine. We never saw them again.
The
other things worth mentioning were the Buddhist monks
constantly on mobile phones (VodaFone must get you closer
to Buddha), the young Japanese girl who put on a show
for us and the little bit of England we left on the border
- these made one hell of an experience. However, as much
fun as it was, we decided to fly back to Bangkok instead
of repeat the train!
